Gratitude: A Tribute to the Pillars of My Journey

Life is a rich tapestry of experiences, interwoven with threads of challenge and triumph. Today, as I pause to reflect on my journey and recent changes, I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude. Four weeks ago, I was promoted to a new, influential role at work, and during this pivotal transition, I fractured my toe. Despite the physical pain, I embraced this new chapter with steadfast determination. Now, as I take a moment to rest and reflect, I see my journey coming together like a beautifully crafted puzzle, revealing a pattern of unwavering support, boundless love, and immense resilience.

This morning, as I took time to ponder my path, tears of gratitude and deep trust in the universe flowed freely. I recalled a powerful sentiment I once encountered: “What are you afraid of? Haven’t I taken care of you so far?” This reflection on my past has left me fearless about the future, reassured by the steady guidance the universe has provided.

I am deeply fortunate to have been raised by a father whose progressive thinking defied societal norms. While others urged him to marry me off after high school, he encouraged me to dream big. “You can be anything you want, including the president!” he would affirm. My mother’s unwavering commitment to my education, helping me with homework, and my beautiful aunt—who left us too soon but taught me math before heading to her teaching job—were foundational to my growth. My uncle, who introduced me to the concept of a Ph.D., and my grandfather, who proudly showcased my spelling skills, all played vital roles in shaping my development. Another uncle nurtured my love for knowledge through books like The Bhagavad Gita and My Experiments with Truth by Gandhi. Though these cherished family members are no longer with us, their impact is indelibly etched in my journey.

From the age of six to sixteen, I lived next to a temple in Punjab, a sanctuary that became my refuge. The serene Goddess statue, with her powerful yet peaceful demeanor, symbolized the inner strength I was unknowingly cultivating. This early experience instilled in me a deep sense of resilience and purpose.

As I immigrated to Quesnel, British Columbia, and began my studies at high school and the College of Caledonia in Prince George, my family’s support was unwavering. My older brother braved harsh weather to drive me to college, while my mother and younger brother stayed with me during this crucial time. Despite his own struggles, my father visited every weekend, enduring the harshest winters with remarkable endurance while blood flew uncontrollably from his ruptured nose blood vessels due to -40 deg weather.

When I transitioned to the University of British Columbia, my father continued to support me financially, despite tight resources. His sacrifices were a testament to his belief in my potential. My journey through graduate school, meeting my husband, and raising two wonderful children has been filled with pivotal moments. Throughout these experiences, the support of my husband, family, and friends—especially during our battle with cancer—has been immeasurable. Their encouragement and love have been my pillars of strength.

My girlfriends, some of whom have stood by me for decades, have offered unwavering support. One friend once told me, “Cream always rises, and you will too!”—a reminder of my potential. Another gifted me a cup that read, “You got this!” Their steadfast belief in me has been a beacon of strength. These friends embody the spirit of a question from the Bhagavad Gita when Arjuna asks Krishna, “Who are your own?” in the face of difficult choices. Krishna’s response was, “The ones who stand by us through thick and thin are our own.” True support transcends bloodlines and is defined by the bonds we forge.

Today, as I honor the remarkable individuals who have been part of my journey, I am overwhelmed with gratitude. Each person and every moment of support has shaped who I am and where I stand today. Though the path has been long and challenging, it has been profoundly rewarding.

As I move forward, I carry with me the lessons learned, the love shared, and the unwavering support of those who have been with me every step of the way. This journey stands as a testament to the power of gratitude and the profound impact of those who shape our lives.
