A Treasure of a Lifetime

As the morning light broke one day during this Father’s Day week, I watched my partner step up to my car to say goodbye, having just unplugged my vehicle for my daily commute to work. In that simple moment, I was struck by what a treasure he is. He expresses his love, not in words, but in the steady, beautiful language of doing. It is the aroma of fresh coffee waiting for me when I wake, the quiet preparations that make my mornings easier, and the refrigerator stocked with nourishing food, along with occasional treats.

My heart is full as I reflect on the broader circle of men who enrich my world. I recently had the great fortune of gathering with my own father, my brothers, and nephews. Though distance separates me from my son, our frequent, heartfelt calls keep our bond unbreakable, and my family’s circle has only grown warmer with the welcome addition of my daughter’s partner.

Even in my professional life, I am surrounded by wonderful men, including my boss, who are dedicated husbands, devoted fathers, and loving grandfathers. They bring their character and strength not just to their homes, but to their work. Outside work, many men friends fulfill my life.

While Mother’s Day often overflows with celebrations and attention, the quiet devotion of fathers and men can sometimes slip by uncelebrated on their special day. When we truly think about the men in our lives, we must acknowledge the silent, heavy pressures that often rest upon their shoulders, the enduring, societal expectations to be steadfast providers and unwavering protectors. Today, I want to recognize that weight and validate their tireless efforts.

I dedicate this Father's day to all these wonderful men, treating them as the absolute treasures they are. Above all, my own father is a priceless treasure who has entrusted me with an heirloom of the soul: his cherished copy of the Guru Granth Sahib. It is written in Urdu, a language I do not yet know how to read. But I plan to learn. Long after my beloved father has left this world, this sacred book, a treasure trove of wisdom and love, will remain with me as a timeless bridge between his spirit and mine.

Here is to all the treasured men in our lives.

May you be deeply appreciated and celebrated today and every day. I wish you long, peaceful, healthy, and joy-filled lives.
